Other Dessert Fads May Come and Go, But Ice Cream Always Remains a Favorite

In any given two-week period, 40% of Americans will eat ice cream, aaccording to research by NPD Group. With a statistic like that it should come as no surprise that there are nearly 1.5 billion gallons of ice cream and similar desserts produced in the U.S. every year. And while many ice cream stores pride themselves in teh unique flavors that they offer their customers the truth is that it is pretty hard to beat the traditional vanilla flavor. In fact, vanilla remains the most popular flavor among the 28% of consumers surveyed by the International Ice Cream Association member companies.
Consider some of these other facts about the ice cream and frozen yogurt industry:

  • 9% of all the milk produced by dairy farmers in America is used to produce ice cream products.
  • 2,582 frozen yogurt stores were in operation at the end of the year 2013.
  • After the churning process, ice cream generally contains more than 50% air.
  • Gelato, on the other hand, contains between 3% and 8% milkfat and only 25% to 30% air.
  • 90% of U.S. households regularly indulge in a sweet, frozen treat.
  • 28.5 times is the average number of times a year that an American will indulge in a sweet treat like ice cream or frozen yogurt.
  • Of all the months of the year, June, the start of summer, is the month when the most ice cream is produced.
